Your Questions Answered

What is endodontics?

Endodontics is the branch of dentistry which aims to treat disease affecting the dental pUlp. Dental pUlp is the sensitive soft tissue in the centre ofthe tooth within the root canal system, mainly composed of nerves and blood vessels.

What is root canal treatment?

It's one type of endodontic treatment that aims to prevent ortreat disease in the tissue surrounding the tooth when the dental pUlp is diseased or has died.
A small hole is drilled in the centre ofthe tooth to allow removal of the pUlp and/or disinfection of the root canal system. The root canal system is then filled to prevent re-infection.

Why is it necessary?

When the dental pUlp becomes diseased or dies, it can cause pain and swelling. Without treatment, the infection could progress, even in the absence of pain, and the tooth may need to be removed.
Root canal treatment will help retain the tooth, preserve your appearance, allow you to chew with comfort and help maintain neighbouring teeth.

What is the alterernative to root canal treatment?

The alternative is having the tooth extracted. The missing tooth maybe replaced with a removable partial denture, bridge or an implant.

Why has my dentist referred me to a specialist?

Specialists in endodontics have the skills required to treat challenging cases. Some general dental practices also lack the specialist equipment required.

What can I expect at my first visit?

Your first visit will be a consultation. You will discuss the treatment proposed by your dentist before your specialist endodontist thoroughly examines the area affected and explains the options available.
You will be asked to complete a medical history questionnaire so please arrive 10 minutes priorto the appointed time and bring the names of any medication you may be taking as well as contact details for your GP.

How much will it cost?

Root canal treatment and the restoration of your natural, tooth may be less expensive than tooth extraction and replacement with a denture, bridge or an implant.
The exact cost will vary depending on the nature of the problem and the tooth affected. An estimate of the cost will be provided on the day of your consultation. Payment is expected at the end of each visit.

What happens after root canal treatment?

You will return to your dentistfor a definitive restoration. This may involve a crown to protect the tooth and restore it to full function. You will be recalled after 6 months to 1 year following treatment to monitor the extent of healing.
